The 7 Most Important Steps to Take After a Workplace Injury

Category: Personal Injury

Let’s face it, nobody likes a workplace injury, but no matter how much you try to prevent them, they’re going to happen eventually. There are nearly 3 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses every year. If you are affected by one of these injuries, or if you witness one on your shift, you need to know how to handle things if and when they unfold in your vicinity. Following are some of the most important steps to take immediately after someone suffers an injury in the workplace.

1. Get to safety!

First things first, get out of harm’s way. If the person injured is not able to move they may be susceptible to more injuries in the area. Get to safety.

2. Prevent further injuries

If there is a possibility that somebody could be injured in the same way, take measures to immediately prevent that. This could mean shutting off machinery, clean the area, or possibly sending everybody home for the rest of the day.

3. Seek emergency treatment if needed

If the person injured has life-threatening injuries, call for help immediately. An emergency vehicle can arrive on the scene within 8 minutes. If the injury is not emergent, treat the injury with first-aid.

4. File a report

You need to file a report with your supervisor as soon as possible. No matter how the incident happened, you need this report later. Whether you are going to seek legal action or not, this report will be the groundwork for your workers’ compensation claim if necessary. Write it all down and interview any witnesses that may help.

5. Contact an attorney

If the injury was the result of somebody else’s negligence or actions, legal action may be your best next step, but an attorney will be the only person who can tell you for sure. So contact an attorney and talk through it all. Let us at Win My Lawsuit be your fighting force!

6. File for workers’ compensation

If no legal action is being taken, file for workers’ compensation benefits. Your benefits cover all of your medical needs caused by the accident in the workplace. It doesn’t matter how it happened or who’s fault it was, you will be protected.

7. Seek medical treatment

If your injuries did not need emergency attention, now is the time to get the medical attention you need. You can see your regular physician or go to an urgent care.

It is important that your workplace takes your injury seriously and takes measures to prevent it from happening to anybody else. Make sure that you are clear about how things happened so you can protect people in the future.
