5 Common Mechanical Problems That Lead to Car Accidents

Bad Tires

On average, your tires have a life expectancy between about 25,000 and 50,000 miles. If your tires go past this, they can become too thin and the tread will become worn. When this happens, it is easier for tires to slip on the road, take longer to brake, or make it difficult for you to control your vehicle well. Tire blowouts are also a big contributor to accidents. A tire can blowout if it is over-inflated or under-inflated. Sudden weather changes such as extreme heat or freezing can cause a tire blowout as well. When a tire blows out, it can drastically take away your ability to control your vehicle.

Faulty Headlights or Taillights

Headlights and taillights are extremely necessary for driving. At night, your headlights are a vital part of your ability to see where you are going, as well as others being able to see you. When one or both of your headlights go out, the chances of you hitting something that you may not be able to see. Your taillights are important in the day and night. Your taillights are your signal to the people driving behind you that you are slowing down or stopping. Without that signal, people will not know that you are coming to a stop, and will hit you from behind.

Poor Brake Maintenance

There are three ways that brakes can cause an accident, which, according to the crash stats report, cause 22% of the accidents that we see.

  • Worn or faulty brake lines: if there is a leak somewhere in the brake line, it could be leaking brake fluid, which can compromise the performance of the brakes.
  • ABS malfunction: Antilock Brake System (ABS) is designed to prevent the wheels from locking when a driver hits the brakes hard, which can cause sliding and losing control.
  • Worn brake pads: Brake pads should be replaced about every 50,000 miles give or take a bit, but if they are not replaced, they can wear down to almost nothing. This makes it so the stopping time can be long, which can cause accidents.

Regular maintenance on your entire brake system is important to prevent accidents.

Malfunctioning Wipers

If it doesn’t rain regularly in your city, it could be very easy to forget about your windshield wipers, but maintenance on your wiper blades is very important. When your wipers become worn down, or dry out, they don’t work properly. The goal is for your wipers to clear the rain and debris from your windshield so you can see clearly. When those are not working properly your vision will become impaired and can cause an accident. You should check your wipers frequently and replace them about every 6 months, or sooner, if there is any tear in them.

Faulty Steering Wheel and Suspension

When you feel your wheel shaking or feel like your wheel is being pulled to the left or the right, it is time to get your vehicle serviced. This is a sign that your steering or suspension is off, which makes it hard to control your vehicle properly.

Accidents are never 100% guaranteed to be avoidable, but with attention to these 5 areas and regular maintenance, you can have peace of mind that you did your best to avoid an unnecessary accident.
