5 Most Common Factors that Lead to Driving Accidents

5 Most Common Factors that Lead to Driving Accidents

Category: Personal Injury

Accidents happen.  Many times there is nothing we can do to prevent them.  However, there are things you can be aware of to do your best to avoid an accident.

Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is the leading cause of accidents on the road.  This used to be populated mostly by teen drivers, but the numbers are becoming more even lately.  The use of cell phones has greatly impacted this statistic in recent years.

Speeding

Driving over the speed limit is something that 9 out of 10 Americans say that they do.  It seems harmless because it feels like you can be in control as an experienced driver no matter how fast you are driving.  However, the speed limits are put into place in certain areas for a reason. It’s important to pay attention to speed limits and follow them.  When you are speeding, one wrong twist of the wheel could send you spinning into a wall or another vehicle.

Driving Under the Influence

Driving under the influence puts you (and others on the road) at high risk.  Your ability to judge depth and control your muscles correctly is compromised while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Drink responsibly! If you are going to drink or use recreational drugs, plan ahead.  Hire a taxi or use a “rideshare” app like Uber or Lyft.

Weather

According to the Federal Highway Administration, 22 percent of accidents are caused by weather conditions.  Ice on the road causes your vehicle to become out of your control. When there is heavy rain or heavy snowfall, it becomes difficult to see clearly.  These are just a few examples of how weather conditions can cause an accident. To do your best to avoid an accident during bad weather, avoid the roads these days, put chains on your tires, and make sure your windshield wipers are working right.

Reckless Driving

We all know the “Fast and the Furious” movie franchise and many have seen the films.  However, did you know that the car scenes are filmed in a closed course and the drivers are highly trained? Nobody should attempt any type of reckless driving on the actual road.  Reckless driving can be cool to watch in movies, but in real life, this type of driving puts yourself and drivers around you at serious risk of injury or death.
